Happy 10 months to Owen!

About three weeks ago, he waved for the first time. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that I’ve never been so proud of anybody for any thing they have ever done. My little boy is connecting. Look at that, he’s waving. His eyes are lighting up, for even he knows that he’s doing something magical.

He’s turning into a little person.

A beautiful little person, but a challenging one too. Just a few days ago we went to Whole Foods after work, to get him some mangoes and avocadoes and bananas. He usually loves riding in shopping carts. This time his face turned red and he let out one of those soundless cries. Who would have thought that the soundless cries are the worst? I wasn’t frustrated with him. Just sad for him. So I chucked his 23-pound body onto my hip and trudged onward. I forgot the bananas.

He loves Flush’s food bowls. Sometimes we catch him in a slow, tender-footed crawl to the dog bowls. We say his name, and he speeds up so that he can slap the bowls before we “redirect” him with a firm “no.” He does this repeatedly, and cries every time he isn’t allowed to touch the food bowls. The food bowls have been moved to the garage.

It wouldn’t be true to say that every single moment of parenthood is wonderful. Some days are tiresome in bad ways. Other days are tiresome in great, we-had-a-lot-of-fun ways. Some days Kyle says, weeping, “I’m so glad he inherited your, um, persistence, stubbornness and curiosity?” Other days I rejoice that Owen is as smiley and cheerful as his dad.

He’s our 10-month-old, beautiful, stubborn, smiley, adventurous, calm, adaptable, persistent, strong, brave little boy. He is special, wouldn’t you say?
