Weight Wars

Tomorrow will mark the beginning of “Weight Wars.” I challenged Kyle to see which of us could lose a higher percentage of body weight by July 1. This competition was inspired by superficial reasons, no doubt, but also to help us cultivate healthier bodies via wiser eating habits and more diligent exercise. We’re still deciding on the winner’s prize. I’m hoping for a used, in-decent-condition digital SLR camera, but I’ll probably have to settle for a high-five.

I’m kicking off our competition by abstaining from sweets. Well, my plan was to kick off our competition by abstaining from sweets, but you can see that one of the “Grace 2″ items was lemon bars. A very plural lemon bars.

Kyle is kicking off our competition by unabashedly “loading up on food big-time” – insert his excited face here – so that he can gain a few pounds before our first weight check. This will enable him to “lose more weight.” Huh? Apparently he’s only “a few pounds from his target weight anyway” and wants to keep a bit of his chub so that he can have some weight “to throw around.” I think he’s talking in terms of basketball, but I quit listening because he started to hurt my brain.

Anyway, we’re weighing in tomorrow to get our starting weights. We’ll continue to weigh-in every Sunday night, at which time I will chart our percentage of weight-loss and post our results on this blog, over there in the right margin somewhere. (Public accountability!) I’m also going to strive to post a few foodie items regularly. Neither Kyle nor I are health experts by any stretch — so we’re just going to implement some good ol’ common sense with the occasional side of lazy research.

But here’s something to try: Buy some bison today!

I was grocery shopping at Whole Foods the other night and wasn’t going to get home until late, and definitely didn’t want to spend tons of time preparing dinner. So, I bought some ground buffalo meat and told Kyle to heat up the grill. Buffalo meat is supposedly sooo much better for you than beef, so I wanted to give the beasts a try.

When I got home, I combined the meat with garlic powder, cumin, and some chopped-up jalapeños that I dug out of the crevices of our refrigerator. I formed the meat into patties and let Kyle do the cooking. We ate them on a whole-wheat bun.

They were fantastic. Not only were we eating a healthier alternative to beef, but: grilling = Amy not cooking = Kyle learning how to cook = happiness.

  4. GO AMY GO!! I am pulling for you! You can do it! :)

  5. Dude you guys should do some ground turkey too. My wife doesn’t eat beef but we’ll get it and do “taco night” and I can’t tell the difference.

  6. Buffalo is great! So is venison! Both are WAY leaner than beef.
